Level 1 and 2 rugby league coaching courses are now up and running with all the courses, including detailed descriptions, advertised on the RFL website www.rfl.uk.com under the Community section. Click on 'Coach Education'

The Coach Education department has many new faces:

Fiona Allen, Centre Approval and Accreditation Manager is responsible for looking after the programme of coaching courses and ensuring that they are delivered, wherever possible, to meet the needs of the local clubs. Fiona also ensures that the RFL meet all the requirements of the UKCC awarding body.

Any course enquiries can be directed to Fiona direct on 0113 237 5010 or e-mail coaching@rfl.uk.com.

Tom, as Centre Administrator, supports the programme on a day to day basis looking after all the course administration, processing applications and payments, ensuring information gets to candidates on time and generally making things happen.

Haydn Walker, National Link Manager, leads on the development of existing coaches - STEPs programmes, Coaching e zines, mentoring, working with Sports Coach UK and will also input into all coach education resources and programmes.

Vinny Webb, Education and Training Manager, takes care of the development of the qualifications, training courses, deals with resources, UKCC and tutor workforce; basically everything to do with the coaching qualifications and related training of coaches.

Helen Hiley, Education and Training Officer, looks after the day to day requirements of an ever developing tutor workforce and plays an important part in ensuring the department continue to meet UKCC standards.

Coach Education are trying to adopt a more flexible, demand led approach focussed on the needs of the game and will look to support clubs and the community game, wherever they can. Please remember though they do have to operate within given boundaries and will never be able to please all of the people all of the time - but they will try our best!

Coach Ed believe in customer service and will always try to help where possible. Just give them a call if you have any queries.

To contact Coach Education, in the first instance call on 0113 237 5010 or e-mail coaching@rfl.uk.com. You can also find information on the web at www.rfl.uk.com, following the links from community game to coach education. Here you will find application forms, information on courses, dates of courses, etc. They are looking to add to and develop our pages over the coming weeks and months so do please keep checking.

Level 1 courses are more suitable for those with limited rugby league and coaching experience. The content focuses on basic and core elements of the game, the mini and modified games making it more suitable for those looking at coaching at the younger end of the game. However, this does not preclude it from being a good starting point for coaches working with older children and open age. Its an important, useful and valuable qualification.

It?s a 2 day course, usually spanning a weekend - there is pre course work that must be completed but its not too taxing and quite enjoyable. Candidates will usually get this about 4 weeks before the course.

Level 2 courses are suitable for those with a fair degree of coaching experience and people who are currently in a coaching environment. It's a 4 day course (attendance is mandatory on all 4 days) spread over a period of several weeks to allow the theory to be put into practice during coaching sessions. The course looks at developing skills through planning, basic team organisation within the 13 a side game, how to motivate your team as well as fitness and conditioning within rugby league. This is a step up from Level 1 and does require some home study, commitment and time.
