21 Feb 2004 - Clubmark
The visit was to celebrate the fact that the Warrington Rugby League Service Area has recently become the first one in the UK in which every grassroots club has attained Sport England's Club Mark accreditation.
The Minister - together with officials from Sport England and the Rugby Football League (RFL) - presented awards to Wolves Chief Executive Andy Gatcliffe and Chairman Lord Hoyle at half time to mark the occasion. Representatives from each club in the area also received presentations.
Thousands of young people in the town's Rugby League clubs are set to benefit from the milestone which boosts standards of club administration.
Sport England's Rugby League 'Clubmark' has been spearheaded locally by Warrington Service Area with extra support, guidance and resources to improve the way they work and support the development of young people.
The aim of the initiative, coordinated by the Council's sport development team Sport Warrington, is to ensure all clubs provide quality, safe, effective and enjoyable environments for all their players, parents, coaches, officials and volunteers and to share good ideas and 'best practice' between sports clubs.
The Clubmark initiative sets target criteria within the core categories of: -
Duty of Care and Child protection
Club Management
The Playing Programme
Sports Equity and Ethics
The Club Mark scheme covers issues of health and safety, risk assessment details, emergency procedures, reporting accidents and first aid.
Commenting on the achievement Neil Kelly, Warrington's Rugby League Development Officer, said: "Young people make an enormous contribution to the social and sporting life of our communities and we hope that the Clubmark accreditation will play a vital role in making sure we can continue to develop opportunities both for them and their sports clubs. Clubmark will break new ground in our communities by providing sports clubs with more support, information and advice than ever before."
Steve Fairhurst, RFL Active Sports National Development Manager - "This huge success for the Warrington area signals not only a significant achievement by all the clubs in the Service Area, but the further strengthening of local grassroots rugby league and the reputation of the pro-active Warrington rugby league community. The support given by the Wolves themselves in staging the presentation on this historic first ever game day in their new stadium can only help us further as we strive to promote the initiative."
